Early Life and Education
Seyla Benhabib was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Istanbul, Turkey.
She attended the American College for Girls in Istanbul before pursuing her studies in the United States at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, where she earned her undergraduate degree in philosophy.
Academic Career
After receiving her Ph.D.
in philosophy from Yale University at the age of 27, Benhabib returned to Europe and spent over fifteen years in Germany, where she conducted research in the tradition of the Frankfurt School. In 1991, she was invited to the New School for Social Research in New York City.
In 1993, she joined the faculty of Harvard University, where she also s
