    Mvuso Mbebe, who has died in Kempton Park, on the East Rand, at the age of 52, was a sports activist and administrator who helped to bring South African sport in from the cold after apartheid legislation was scrapped in the early 1990s.

    As CEO of the powerful National Sports Council which was answerable to the first democratic government led by Nelson Mandela, he played an important role in the creation of single, unified, nonracial sports bodies and their participation in international events after years of isolation.He led a delegation from Athletics South Africa that successfully submitted a bid to host the World Cross Country Championship in 1996 and the 1998 World Cup in Athletics.
