IBM has long been a company that runs in families.

    Here's one in which two generations touch IBM's mainframe computer, one at its birth and one today. Call it a tale of two Tooles: Patrick Toole, the father. and Patrick Toole Jr., the son.

    The elder Patrick Toole joined IBM right out of college at a time when his newly acquired skills fitted him to work on the biggest IBM project ever: inventing the first true mainframe, the System/360, which came out 50 years ago.

    He later rose to a corporate technology post.

    His son joined IBM 30 years ago and worked his way through engineering, manufacturing, sales and other jobs to become chief information officer and, in July 2013, general manager of System z — today's mainframe.

    The elder Toole recalls the technology excitement of the mid-1960s.
